Modernising Technical Documentation: A Case Study for Powertek
About Powertek
Powertek designs and manufactures high-precision measurement equipment. Their clients work in fields where accuracy really matters, and their instruments are trusted by engineers, researchers and manufacturers worldwide. Over time, their product range expanded, but their supporting documentation didn’t evolve at the same pace.
Like many technical businesses with long histories, Powertek’s collection of datasheets had grown organically over the years. The documents still worked, technically speaking, but they lacked consistency. Some had clearly been updated more recently than others. A few were visually dated. Others looked fine on their own but didn’t belong to any recognisable system. It had become difficult to maintain, and harder still to feel proud of.

The Challenge: Overcoming 30 Years of Fragmented Branding
Why Consistency Matters for High-Precision Equipment
The team at Powertek wanted to bring everything together into a clean, consistent format. They weren’t just looking for a fresh design. They wanted something practical that could be used across hundreds of products, something flexible enough to work across teams, and something that felt professional without being overly designed.
“Our old datasheets whilst informative were created over a period of 30+ years. They had numerous designs and formats. As a company we wanted to create a datasheet that enabled us to have one format, looked modern and was consistent in its looks across a variety of products. Nick at Kreatif understood this and produced a template we could use across our products that fit our requirements perfectly.”
The project quickly revealed itself to be more than a one-time redesign. It was the start of a slow but deliberate transformation of how Powertek presents its work. It also became clear that their sister company, PX Electronic, was dealing with similar challenges. The same process would need to be applied there too.
The Discovery & Visual Hierarchy Audit
Rather than jumping straight into templates, we started by studying the materials already in use. Some were tightly formatted and clear. Others felt dense, even cluttered. Layouts varied not only between product lines but sometimes within the same document.
We explored options for standardising structure, typography and visual hierarchy. The goal wasn’t to strip personality out of the documents, but to give them a shared identity. We wanted someone to look at any page and know it came from Powertek.
Alongside the datasheets, we also began looking at other visual elements. Product images needed retouching or resizing. There were opportunities to replace blocks of text with simple infographics. In some cases, we created new diagrams to explain product benefits more clearly.
This wasn’t about flash. It was about clarity. About helping the people who use these documents get the information they need faster and with fewer assumptions.
The Journey: A Collaborative and Iterative Approach
Real-World Testing and Flexible Communication
Rather than pushing everything live in one big reveal, we worked gradually, testing each new version and adjusting along the way.
“Working with Nick is an easy and enjoyable experience. When I first met with him to explain my vision and what I wanted to achieve, he was very good at helping me manage my expectations. He explained that while all the things I was asking for were certainly achievable, it would be sensible to take a phased approach to the project, beginning by getting the foundations right for a robust site that would ensure longevity.”
“Dividing the project into discrete phases enabled me to understand the amount of work involved, and it also allowed us to budget. As a charitable organisation, money is always an issue, but this way, rather than having to deal with one large bill, our project costs are spread over several years.”
“Nick also generously offered to work pro bono on developing our web accessibility tool. This arrangement benefitted us both. As well as assisting us in keeping our costs down, it helped Nick, who was keen to use our website to acquire new knowledge and skills that Kreatif could apply to other projects.”
Design feedback came through regularly, and the communication remained flexible. Calls when needed. Quick messages otherwise. No bloated meetings or decks.
As more of the templates were put into use, the internal response was positive. Externally too, clients and partners began noticing the change. Not necessarily because it was flashy, but because things just made more sense.

“They have been very well received. They are clear, easy to navigate with informative index pages and provide a professional look to all whom use them.”
That kind of feedback reinforced the decision to commit long-term. Once the structure was in place, extending it across the entire product catalogue felt like the obvious next step.
“We wanted to create a look that was consistent across all of our product ranges. This meant going through every product and amending to our new design. We were happy with the initial work and therefore continuing was never in doubt.”
The Result: Professional Clarity and Increased Brand Confidence
Ongoing Partnership: Beyond the Datasheet
Powertek now has a design system they can trust and build on. Not just a fresh look, but a framework that helps them work more confidently, share information more clearly, and present themselves in a way that matches the quality of their products.
“We are now more confident when communicating with our customers. We are proud of the materials we send out with quote requests, show on our website and include when we ship our products.”
What started with datasheets has grown into a broader partnership. We continue to support Powertek with product imagery, infographics, social media graphics and other visual materials. The process continues quietly in the background, one piece at a time.
“Kreatif have delivered on our requests and ideas to create a datasheet we are proud of. Not only that but they have also been on hand for smaller projects such as image optimisation. They respond quickly, professionally and always keep us up to date. We will be using them for future projects across our group of companies to achieve similar results.”
There’s nothing dramatic about it. But sometimes, the most meaningful brand work doesn’t come with a big launch or a new logo. It happens slowly, through consistency. Through listening. Through choosing clarity over clutter.
And through treating even the most technical details with care.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is a design system important for technical documentation?
For engineering firms with hundreds of products, a design system ensures every datasheet, brochure, and manual follows a unified visual hierarchy. This creates professional consistency, reduces document creation time, and builds trust with engineers who rely on clear, accurate information.
How can we modernise 30+ years of legacy technical documents?
We start with a thorough audit of existing materials to identify core data needs. By creating a flexible “framework” or design system, we can gradually transition legacy materials into a modern, consistent format without losing the essential technical details.
Does Kreatif Design Limited handle image optimisation for technical products?
Yes. As part of our ongoing partnership with clients like Powertek, we provide professional image optimisation and infographic design to ensure technical graphics are clean, sharp, and consistent across all digital and print materials.
